Jean René Désiré Françaix was born on the 23rd of May 1912 in Le Mans. After Maurice Ravel told the parents of young Jean that he was gifted, they supported his musical studies and Françaix became not only a virtuoso pianist, but also a composer of over 200 pieces. He wrote in a wide variety of styles, including concerti, symphonies, opera, theatre, ballet, and movie scores until his death in 1997.
